The Arlington Outdoor Education Association (AOEA) is managed by a Board of Directors that is made up of educators, scientists, and administrators that are dedicated to providing the students of Arlington County a place where they can engage in outdoor studies.

Board Members: 

Judy Collins has in Northern Virginia since 1979 and in Arlington since 1987. Her son is a graduate of Arlington Public Schools, and of every Outdoor Lab program offered, including summer camps. In October of 2005 he completed his Eagle Scout project requirement at the Outdoor Lab.

Ms. Collins has worked as research director at NALP (National Association for Law Placement) since 1991, and prior to that worked at USDA and United Way of America. She has been a volunteer with AOEA since 2007, assisting with outreach efforts and serving as volunteer coordinator. Other community activities have included PTA's, and various school and county advisory committees. She has been a member of APS' Social Studies Advisory Committee since 1998, and has been treasurer of the Bluemont Civic Association, and also served as its newsletter distributor since 2003. Paul Diehl

Lisa Fues is a consultant with a strategic management/communications firm. She is also pursuing a Masters Degree in Business at George washington University. She has volunteered over the past year for the Outreach Committee and developed a marketing plan for the Lab as part of her Masters program. As a relatively new Arlington resident, she was enthusiastic about getting involved in the community and has enjoyed being involved in the AOEA. She looks forward to future opportunities the Outdoor Lab will provide for the children of Arlington County. Back to Top

Kathleen V. McKnight is a native Arlingtonian who graduated from Washington-Lee High School. Her four daughters have all attended Arlington Public Schools. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a nursing degree, and obtained a Masters degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She has worked as a consultant in the area of maternal and child health at the local, state and federal levels, as well as in the private sector. At the time her first daughter was born, she was a home care nurse for the Hospice of Northern Virginia.

Over the past fifteen years, Ms. McKnight has operated her own business providing computer consultation services to other businesses. She is an applications expert, specializing in the areas of database design and maintenance, spreadsheets, statistical analysis, presentation graphics, desktop publishing, and a variety of other computer related support projects. Ms. McKnight has been a volunteer for the Arlington Outdoor Education Association since 1995, and is the Membership Chair, with the primary responsibility coordinating our annual membership campaign and for maintaining the membership database. Maureen McManus has served as the AOEA treasurer since joining the board in 2000. During the time that her children attended Arlington Public Schools, she was an active participant on various committees within the PTA and held the position of PTA president at both the elementary and middle school levels. She is also a member of the board at Overlee Community Association where she serves as the membership chair.

Maureen received a BA in Mathematics from the University of Dayton and an MBA from Virginia Tech. Her work experience includes 10 years as a financial analyst in the area of public utility rate-making as well as several years as a network cost analyst in telecommunications.  Back to Top

Michael Nardolilli, a graduate of Georgetown University, received his law degree from the College of William & Mary in 1981. A litigator with almost twenty years of experience representing Fortune 500 corporations in multi-million dollar insurance coverage disputes, Mike joined The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust (NVCT) in 1999 as its Vice President and General Counsel. Since its founding in 1994, NVCT has permanently protected over 100 acres of Northern Virginia from development.

Mike is a long-time community activist in Arlington and has previously served in numerous capacities, including Chairman of the Arlington County Transportation Commission, Vice Chairman of the Arlington County Democratic Committee, and Secretary of the Swanson PTA. Mike has three children in the Arlington public schools and currently teaches a fourth-grade Sunday School class at St. Ann's in Arlington. Back to Top

Todd Parker has lived in Arlington for over 20 years and has done the Lab Notes Newsletter since Fall 2004. He has experienced the Lab "first hand" by attending a 5th grade overnight and numerous open houses with his children Holly and Devon. Todd works for the Department of the Navy and has been the Comptroller of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Bethesda since 1996. Back to Top

Ron Oleynik is a 25 year resident of Arlington, who lives in the Ashtown Heights neighborhood with his wife, Nancie, and their two daughters, Haley and Nina.  Ron is an attorney with the law firm of Holland & Knight in Washington, practicing in the area of international trade. He and the family are big outdoor enthusiasts.

Mary Ann Penning and her husband Nick transplanted their family to Arlington from Illinois in 1977.  She eventually resumed her teaching career in 1986 and is currently a fourth grade teacher at Randolph Elementary.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she shares the math lead teacher position and co-chairs Helping Hands, offering students the opportunity to make sandwiches for the homeless.  Over the years, she has enjoyed being able to take her former fifth grade students to the Outdoor Lab for their first camping experience.  Her own four daughters, now in their thirties, enjoyed the Outdoor Lab and one summer she was the cook for the summer program.  To serve food warm to over fifty campers and staff was the hardest job she’d ever undertaken, not to mention the dishes involved.  Mary Ann received her undergraduate teaching degree from Illinois State University and her Master of Education degree from George Mason University.  Back to Top 

Bob Schrider is a graduate of the University of Virginia and a 25 year resident of Arlington along with his wife Sue, and children Sydney and Jack. Bob’s kids have attended overnights with their class, and their dad, as well as summer camp, and love the Lab. He is a Chief Estimator with Balfour Beatty Construction, Leed Accredited Professional and lends his construction expertise to the Lab facilities, maintenance, and improvements.

Anita Knipling Scott considers herself a true Arlingtonian. Not only did she grow  up in Arlington, where her family had cows on Military Road (!!!) but all 4 of  the Scotts’ children are graduates of YHS. In addition, Anita taught English  in the Arlington schools for over 33 years until she retired in 2000.

She graduated from Westhampton College (Univ. Of Richmond) with a BA in  English and 30 years later earned an M.A. in humanties from Marymount  University. Currently her days often evolve around her 4 grandchildren who  live in nearby McLean, as well as her many other community activities.

Her greatest love, however, is for the AOEA, for which she has served on  the Board of Directors since 1998.. It is part of her heritage, and she finds  it exciting to now be seeing the 2nd and 3rd generations  of Arlington students benefit from the Lab – and knows that it will become  even more precious as future generations come along. Her enthusiasm for the Outdoor Lab is boundless.  Back to Top

Past Board Members:
Jim Bregman is currently the President of DeCo International, Ltd., a consulting firm focusing on Native American business development activities located in Rosslyn. Jim graduated from Wakefield High School in the Class of 1960 and is the AOEA, Inc. coordinator for the Class of '60 Alumni Association. He is currently serving on the fund raising and building committees.

In 1997, Jim retired from the Senior Executive Service after 30 years of Federal service, 15 of which were with the Department of the Interior. Jim was the Chief Information Officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 10 years and retired from the position of Executive Assistant for Economic Development to the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs. Jim also serves on the Board of Directors of the United States Judo Association and was the first American to win an Olympic medal in the sport of Judo at the 1964 Olympic Games.
 
Teresa Rusnak is retired from the Office of Communications, U.S. Department of the Interior. She served as Administrative Officer from 1984 to 2007. Previously, she taught kindergarten in a private school in Falls Church, Virginia. A strong supporter of the Arlington Outdoor Education Association for many years, she has served on the board of directors since 1998 and has served as President and Vice President of the Board and chair of the Finance & Development Committee.
Teresa is a native of Arlington and attended public schools. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in child development from Virginia Tech and has two sons who received a wonderful education in Arlington Public School.

Tim Wallace is a Virginia native, and resident of Arlington for 40 years. Married with two children.

Founder and former owner of T.W. Wallace Construction for 36 years. Under his tenure T.W. Wallace Construction won both local and national awards for business leadership and individual projects. He was a two-term president of the Washington, D.C Metro chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a six-year member of the National Executive Committee of NARI, and two-term chairman of the National NARI Ethics Committee.  He has served on the boards of the Arlington chapter of the Salvation Army, Doorways for Women, Arlington/Falls Church Habitat for Humanity, and the Lyon Village Community Board of Directors. He is a lifetime member of Leadership Arlington.  He has been coaching girls youth softball for over 10 years and is presently an assistant Varsity coach at W-L High School, and the head coach of the Arlington 16U Sage girls fast pitch travel team.  Back to Top
