Neil oversees the educational program at the Outdoor Lab and is responsible for the daily administration of the facility. Neil’s educational background includes an A.A.S. in Forestry from Paul Smith’s College and a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University. Additionally, he has gained teacher certification through course work at various Northern Virginia colleges. Neil has worked in the outdoors for most of his adult life. Among Neil’s experiences, prior to coming to the Outdoor Lab, are supervising trail crews for the Student Conservation Association, surveying boundary lines for the Payette National Forest, and assisting a Cornell professor with research and teaching. Clare McLean
Clare joined the Outdoor Lab team in December of 2010. Clare’s responsibilities include teaching and overseeing the Animal Lab.
Clare attended Arlington Public Schools and enjoyed numerous field trips to the Outdoor Lab, in particular the 5th grade overnight trip. Clare graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a B.A. in Studio Art (minor in Environmental Studies) and an M.A. in Education. Since graduating, Clare has spent the past two years as a seasonal naturalist at Potomac Overlook Regional Park and worked winters at REI (which specializes in outdoor sporting equipment).
Clare discovered her love for environmental education as a counselor with the Audubon Naturalist Society’s Chesapeake Bay Trek summer program. In college, she went on to coordinate the St. Mary’s River Project environmental education program for local fifth graders. After graduate school, Clare continued to teach environmental programs and lead summer nature camps as a naturalist at Potomac Overlook.
Clare lives in McLean, VA with her boyfriend Tommy (another former Arlington student), two friends, and their pet chinchilla. In her free time she enjoys yoga, drawing, painting murals, and spending time with her friends and family.

Jessica Silveri
Jessica joined the Outdoor Lab team in January 2011 as part-time staff. Her responsibilities are varied but she assists with teaching, maintenance, cleaning and animal care.
While growing up in Orange County (the one in Virginia), Jessica enjoyed spending time outdoors hiking, waterskiing, snow skiing and canoeing. She attended James Madison University and earned degrees in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (B.S.) and Secondary Education (M.A.T.). As a student at JMU, Jessica worked for the university’s recreation center as an outdoor trip leader, volunteered on a local farm, and spent summers as an intern and instructor for Outward Bound. These experiences helped Jessica recognize that rain or shine she’d rather be working outdoors.
Though she has enjoyed the opportunity to work as an environmental educator in many other parts of the U.S., Jessica is glad to be back in Virginia able to help local Arlington students connect with their own natural environment.
